A Blog by International Students at Leiden University
Those of you who have started studying in Leiden this or last semester and are going to spend a lot of time in the University Library in the future, are lucky: You can enjoy the fruits of years of re-construction and renewal!
Katharina has accompanied the process in some of her blogposts last year and described the transformation, which was quite incredible really! Did you know that a couple of years ago you had to fight in the reading rooms to find a spot near to a wall socket (or one in the ceiling, which was an insider’s tip) to plug your computer in? And instead of facebook you had the opportunity to procrastinate by enciphering the doodles and drawings on the wooden tables… It had its charm, but in terms of study-wellbeing, the library has done a lot in the past couple of years – power sockets at each table, good light everywhere, comfortable and adjustable chairs for which your backs will probably thank you still in years to come, private study cabins and group workrooms with whiteboards… now that it’s all there you hardly appreciate it, but it really makes studying so much more comfortable and enjoyable! The reconstruction, however, was not so comfortable. The noises and the permanent shifting of books, the unavailability of half of the space due to renovation – all that is a matter of the past now, since today, officially, the project “pimp your library” is fulfilled.
To celebrate this, and as a thank you for the patience with the inconveniences of the last couple of years, the library had a special festive surprise today: It was library wellness day! Including chair yoga lessons, massages in the group workrooms and a big “shelfie” photo action.
I’m sorry I couldn’t post this earlier so you would have had time to go and get a massage, but the real “library wellness” is only starting now really I think: Enjoy all the benefits of the renewal, may it improve your productivity and motivation by at least 200%!
