Best European EDM Summer Festivals

Having purchased my ticket for Mysteryland last week means one thing and one thing only – FESTIVAL SEASON IS UPON US! I thought it’d be a good idea to make a list of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) festivals in Europe for those of you who are moving to the Netherlands this summer or have decided to spend the summer here and want to attend some of the biggest, best summer festivals in the world.

Here is my BEST EDM SUMMER FESTIVALS IN EUROPE list.
I haven’t been to all of them yet (but it’s definitely on my list!)

 SENSATION

The Basics:
This is probably the most generic and well-known EDM festival on this list. Starting in 2000, Sensation Black (harder) and Sensation White (softer) spent its first five years at Amsterdam Arena before spreading to all over the world, including Brazil, Chile, Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, UK, USA, as well as Turkey! What makes the event really “Sensational” is that the creative team redefines what is possible in an indoor event. Spinning DJ booths, lighting, laser shows, smoke machines, and stunt performers makes this event be described as “a Cirque Du Soleil for Clubbers”.

Website:
http://www.sensation.com

When&Where:
5 July, Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Tickets:
Range between 80 to 285 depending on the package you purchase

Line Up:
Mr White
Chuckie
Nicky Romero
Martin Garrix
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike
Nervo

Accommodation:
Sensation is a 1-day event so either travel from home or consider staying in local hotels or hostels. If you’re not living in the Netherlands yet then there’s a travel package option which will set you back between 195-345 and includes your Sensation entrance ticket, transfer to and from Arena, overnight stay, Sensation welcome present, and entrance pass to Heineken Experience.

SONAR

The Basics:
Sonar is a less-well known festival that describes itself as the pulse of the current electronic music landscape. It aims to incorporate culture, nature, the avant-garde, and experimentation with the newest music in the genre. As well as the event in Barcelona, Sónar organizes festivals every year in other cities. In previous years, it has travelled to Reykjavik, Buenos Aires, New York, London, Frankfurt, Seoul, Lisboa, Lyon, Hamburg, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Boston, Denver, Oakland, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Osaka. The festival seeks to be “a global event and a meeting point for creative people”. Sonar is divided into two main locations: Sonar by Day includes concerts, DJ’s, showcases, and Sonar by Night, where the leading names of the current EDM scene are showcased.

TOMORROWLAND

The Basics:
TomorrowLand is the best festival I’ve attended so far. Whilst pricey (and difficult to get tickets because of the high demand), TomorrowLand is the epitome of what a summer festival should be; a whimsical community environment with amazing line-ups. You are spoiled for choice. Known as the biggest electronic music festival in the world, it offers you fanciful stage design, innovative decorations, and fun-packed attractions. The festival turns into its own world and you can feel the magic people experience when they speak of it.

ULTRA

The Basics:
Having made its mark on the USA dance scene at the annual Ultra Festival held in Miami, Ultra began its European journey in 2013 in Croatia. Having attended, I can say that the festival holds a lot of promise. Running over 3 days, Ultra Europe includes some of the biggest names in EDM. The first two days are held at Poljud Stadium in Split, whilst the third day is held in the world-renowned Hvar Island. What makes this festival really special is that it basically allows you to enjoy a beach holiday during the day and attend the festival at nights. Being my first time in Croatia, I can safely say that Croatian’s are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and Adriatic waters are crystal clear. The music is just a bonus!
