A Blog by International Students at Leiden University

I WANT YOU(r opinion): an introduction

Hello everyone!

As a brand new member of the Leidener blogging family I want to use this opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Bernhard, I am an international student from Austria and I’m currently doing my MA degree in Linguistics here at Leiden University.

It has been about six months since I packed my bags and moved from London to Leiden and now I am really glad that I was presented with the opportunity to join the Leidener team and thus be able to share the experiences of my life in the Sleutelstad with all of you.

Since I moved here in August, I have honestly been loving every minute of it. When my head is not buried in books, I am usually out on my old, rusty single speed bakfiets, exploring the city, looking out over the roofs of Leiden from de Burcht, sauntering along the street markets and little stores or simply sitting by a gracht and enjoying the view. One of my big personal interests lies in sustainability movements of all sorts, so most of the time I am involved in some research or project on alternative ways of consuming, housing and sustainable living in general.

oh Leiden, you are so kind to me!

In my posts on this blog I don’t only want to give an insight into my life as a neo-Leidener but I also want to address topics and issues that people are eager to find out or know more about. During my stay in Leiden I have tried to immerse myself into the Dutch culture and gained insights that helped me to enrich and facilitate my daily life considerably; I learnt how to deal with Dutch bureaucracy such as housing benefit applications, housing agencies or study grants, at what time one can get the best vegetable deals at the street markets or where to get the best slices of cake.

Next to tips and tricks on how to look like a proper Dutch person on a bike (prepare for an incomprehensible level of multitasking), I aim to regularly post about things which will equally appeal to someone who has been living here for a while, recently moved here or is planning on doing so. This will involve stories about my studies and personal experience with the university, student activities, meetings, film evenings, language labs, knitting workshops, beach trips, bike groups, … you name it.

This form of blogging is a new experience for me, but at the end of the day I would really like to use this forum in order to directly address readers’ interests in my posts that I will try to publish on a weekly basis. In order to achieve this, I would really appreciate your feedback of any sort, wishes, topic suggestions, criticism; honestly, even a simple cat emoticon would make me happy (very much so).

let’s try and keep it constructive, shall we? #insertrandomGoTmemehere

So, if there is anything you would really like to read about on the Leidener that could also be of interest to others, don’t hesitate to comment on one of my posts or send me a message and I will do my best to feature it.

We shall meet again soon!

I love this blog. I used to live there as a kid (many years ago) and my brother lives there now, he runs the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum.
I’d love to see lots and lots of photos… it will be a year before I can get back there, but I’m looking forward to it already!

Hi there! I’m glad you’ve got such fond memories of the city – let me assure you, it’s still as beautiful as you probably remember it! Do you mean you would like to see lots of photos from Leiden in general or the Pilgrim Museum in particular?
