Almost exactly a year ago I remember Netherlands getting knocked out of FIFA 2014 by Argentina in that nail-biting penalty shoot out. That ended a great world cup campaign for the Dutch and indeed for many of my colleagues here. It’s funny how I haven’t really had to think about the game for almost 12 months since until last week when we had our annual Sterrewacht (observatory) football tournament followed by a barbeque!
And fortunately we were all blessed with hot and sunny weather which made the event all the more enjoyable. The competition is light hearted with everyone from Professors to undergraduates taking part – most of us had funky team names. In keeping with the astronomy spirit my team were called ‘cataclysmic variables’ 🙂 You can look it up on Wikipedia if you are interested and perhaps it will give you an idea of our playing style 😛 Here are some pictures from the day:
We had cheerleaders!
Some great contest
Some people were airborne.
some others blew it away
It was a hot day.
a very hot day!
so we also had lots to drink 🙂
Heat wasn’t the only biter around.
Yes we had to be really careful with him on the pitch
