The Perseids are here!

Every year as the Earth orbits the Sun it passes through Comet debris on its path – this results in a shower of meteors through different constellations around the year. August is the time for the Perseid meteor shower (i.e. from Perseus) with the peak during Aug 11-13. For us in the Netherlands the nights of Aug 12 & 13 seem to be ideal as this coincides with a near New Moon phase thereby providing us with desired dark nights (let us hope there are no clouds 🙂 ). Last year I happened to be in Warsaw where the city’s Planetarium named after the famous astronomer Nicolas Copernicus organized a public event where they shut off nearby street lights and allowed people to watch meteors during the peak hours. I remember counting at least 10 during the one hour I was there for but under excellent viewing conditions one can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour. Here are a couple of photos from last year:

Seeing that it is a near Moon-less night during the peak and also that for us Leideners the beach is quite accessible I think it might be a good idea to pick up your bikes and head to Katwijk for a few hours. I have heard some of my friends making similar plans so don’t worry you won’t be alone at the beach and anyway there should be a few hundred meteors to give you company. Hope we all enjoy a view similar to this:
