The Leidener

A Blog by International Students at Leiden University

beach day in november

One funny habit of the Dutch is complaining about the weather. Let’s be honest though: we cannot really blame them for that – skies are grey pretty often. But then, the good thing is, that a beautiful day perfectly justifies skipping the library…

…where to go? Leiden is not only well-situated for citytrips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Utrecht. On top, within 15 minutes, you are by the sea! Of course, Scheveningen – the most popular seaside resort of the Netherlands – is a must go. However, do not underestimate the beauty and coziness of Katwjik and Noordwjik – plus: one even gets there faster: It is totally doable by bike but, especially in the WINDY and cold season, you (as a non-Dutchie) are definitely  better off taking the bus. Line 20 and 21 are the ones to take running from Leiden Centraal and several other stops (Get this app!).

We got off in Noordwjik which is a little further away and walked back along the shore reaching Katwjik just in time for sunset. Most beach bars and restaurants are open throughout the year, so you will definitely find a warm place for some hot chocolate. Veel plezier!
