A Blog by International Students at Leiden University
If you are anything like me, the end of February marks a slight dip in motivation. Classes are in full swing post-exams, and for those who are finishing their block, assignment deadlines start looming. Libraries are filling up, you’ve had the same lunch for weeks, you may have caught yet another cold, and the sofa and Netflix seem all too tempting…sounds familiar?
Personally, I find that venturing out to find a change of scenery is the ideal way to feel refreshed and to regain momentum. Leiden and The Hague are both full of quirky cafés, big and small, all serving delicious coffee, cake and sandwiches. Whatever your preferred environment, I hope to offer some of my favourite alternatives to get out of any work-funk you may be facing!
Although this is a known favourite place to go for a meal in Leiden, for me this has been my work haven in times of chronic procrastination. The rustic interior offers a very relaxed ambiance, alongside great coffee, fresh tea, infused water to help yourself to and chilled playlists on repeat. Despite being busier during the weekend, in the week there is plenty of room to find somewhere quiet, with most booth tables having sockets to use at leisure. All in all, a visit to Lot is a perfect reason to see another part of Leiden and will have you feeling zen and productive in no time!
Open daily from 9am: Haven 1, 2312 MG
If you really feel like treating yourself to a delicious, hearty meal alongside studying, without breaking the bank, Roos is the place for you! This tiny café is renowned for it’s aesthetic interior and food, with sandwiches that will be sure to keep you full for the rest of the day, and some of the best cake I’ve ever had! Due to its popularity, this is perfect if you want to break the dull silence of the library and do your work amongst good music and a friendly social surrounding.
Open daily from 8am-6pm: Botermarkt 12, 2311 EM
This gem of a café is round the corner from Wijnhaven class building in The Hague Campus of Leiden, and is known for it’s community table as a flexible study space. With an abundance of sockets, speedy wifi and spacious designated work tables, this café offers the perfect work/social balance. With a delicious flat white in hand, and a great menu if you’re going all out, this place will offer you all the productive vibes you need to get back on track!
Mon-Fri: 8am-6pm, Sat: 8am-5pm: Turfmarkt 28, 2511 CA
Last but not least, I recommend the ever-reliable coffee company that can be found in several locations in both Leiden and The Hague. This is an absolute go-to if you want a simple, comfortable and functional space to have a good coffee and get stuff done for all hours in the day. You will never be alone in your studying, making this option great if you need to be inspired by fellow productive students in locations all over the country.
