Cuteness Overload: Dutch Dog Breeds

Members of our families, best friends for life, our furry cute companions: dogs! Many Dutch families have a pet and it often is a dog. There are 11 dog breeds originating from the Netherlands. As a complete dog person, I find some Dutch dog breeds extremely cute and want to share my top 3 picks with you.

  1. Stabyhoun

Descending from Spaniel breed from Spain, this breed was developed in Friesland province of the Netherlands, in the 19th century. Known as intelligent dogs who are eager to learn, obedient and devoted to its master, they are affectionate and loving with children. It gets along well with other animals and in particular dogs.

  1. Keeshond

Dating back to the 16th century, this breed is believed to descend from German Wolfspitz. The name comes from the nickname Kees given by Cornelius de Gyslear, the leader of a rebellion against the Royal House of Orange. Gyslear used this dog as a symbol of his political party. After that, it was used to guard cargoes on barges, therefore becoming known as the Dutch barge dog.

It is an intelligent, noisy, friendly, alert, loyal and cautious dog, that is eager to learn. It is loyal to its master and his family, accepts children and other dogs. It must be socialized from an early age with cats and other household. It barks at strangers.

  1. Kooikerhondje

The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is an old breed, as is to be seen on several paintings of Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, where it is portrayed as the companion dog of a family. You can almost always spot a Kooikerhondje in Jan Steen paintings.

By waving his tail with the white point the dog arouses the curiosity of the ducks and herds the ducks to the end of a tunnel, where they can be caught. Formerly this type of hunting was done on a large scale for the duck’s meat.

The majority of Kooikerhondjes nowadays are companion dogs, who need to live an active life. The coat color is orange red plates on a white fond. They are sweet, friendly and sociable dogs. As my favorite, this will probably be the breed I will get once I am ready to have a dog.

Stabyhouns are awesome. They are actually known to be quite a stubborn breed though. I once saw a mix between a lab, a kooyker and a staby. It was a really cool dog and just a tad smaller than a lab. I’d love a dog like that one day!

It sounds like an lovely mix! I had always wanted to have a golden retriever, until I got to know an amazing kooyker closely and couldn’t help but change my mind 🙂
