De Lakenfeesten- the Ultimate Weekend Plan (27-30.6)

It’s this time of the year again- summer is here, temperatures are high, and you’re done with exams and thesis by now (hopefully). For some, this might also mean that a lot of your friends left back home, but for those of you who are still here, keeping the party going- I’ve still got your back!

So how can you enjoy this apparently festivity-full weekend? Read on…

Leiden Culinaire

How does this sound to you: afternoon live music, food stands offering selected dishes from Leiden restaurants, and (best of all) free entrance. Interested? So am I!

This weekend the Leiden Culinary  Festival will return to Leiden. Between the 27th and the 30th of June, you can enter the festival between 5 pm and 9 pm. What you’ll probably find there are good Leideners enjoying themselves (and the food), and probably a few of your fellow students, too!
So gather around in the Lammermarkt and join the celebration!

Dragonboat Races. Say whaaat?

Yes, you heard me. Dragonboat races in the canals of Leiden. Now that’s a sight!
This race is the largest city race in the Netherlands, where 25 teams will compete. On the 29th of June from 11 am until 5 pm, try to look for the dragon boats in the canals of Leiden.

Peurbakkentocht

Long word, true. But what it refers to is the decorated boat that’ll swarm over the canals of Leiden this Friday from 7 pm – 9 pm. The parade (in a way) is actually competitive, as there will be a winning boat. But not only that, oh no. In theNetherlands, any respectable event is followed by an afterparty! So come to the Stadhuisplein at 9 pm to enjoy live music and the lovable Dutch spirit 😊

Haarlemmerstraat annual market

Remember King’s day? Well, get ready for some more stalls and great bargains! On Friday the annual market will take place, and many shops might have some special discounts, too. So check out Haarlemmerstraat to see what’s going on.

Leids Bierfestival

Don’t forget about the beer festival, that will also take place on the 29th! For more info, check out my previous article https://theleidener.com/2019/05/27/june-events-in-leiden/, or the Facebook event page directly https://www.facebook.com/events/856949231324025/.

All activities mentioned are part of the Lakenfeesten, which takes place this weekend in Leiden. The festival has a long history, which can be traced back to the heyday of the Leiden textile industry. Check out this planner, that might help you remember what happens when:
