A Blog by International Students at Leiden University
At the end of last month, on 23rd of June, I had the chance to listen to one of my favourite lead-singers of all time live. As the concert meant a lot to me and made me thank to the location of my city, I would like to share my experience.
The concert took place in Ziggo Dome, a huge concert area in Amsterdam. I actually have been the venue before, when I came to the viewing party of one of the games Ajax had with Real Madrid at Champions League. Two events, by nature had completely different vibes. Ziggo Dome is easily accessible by train, close to Duivendrecht station. Bonus: It is just opposite of the Johan Cruijff Arena of Ajax, named after its legendary player. With a big stage and many seats with an open ground floor and two floors of balconies surrounding it.
Voice of Mark Knopfler, the lead singer and guitarist of the band Dire Straits, which you probably know from their famous songs such as Sultan of Swings, Brothers in Arms and Romeo and Juliet, hasn’t change over the decades he has been singing. It was also great to see so many people do appreciate this legendary singer, including young people around my age.
Being able to listen to the songs from their writer and see how he interacts with the audience in between the songs with his small jokes was priceless. Additionally, he had a huge band of 10 talented musicians.
After the concert, I look up the event schedule of Ziggo Dome. This once again prove my opinion right: every artist or band that you can imagine has Amsterdam in their tour list. The number of the events going on in the city during just one night is crazy. Combined with the ones in the other cities such as The Hague or Rotterdam, this makes the Netherlands the perfect country to be a student or generally live in. And of course, Leiden as a city in the middle point of all these locations.
Which was the last event you went in the Netherlands? Which ones would you like to join in the future? Share in the comments!
P.S: Here is my favorite song from Dire Straits.
