A Guide to Internships – Part 2

So, now that you have gotten the internship, or you’re considering doing one, to make sure it counts for school there are a couple of things you have to do. I’m not going to lie, it’s not exactly fun to do all of this stuff but it’s really necessary.

One of the first things you have to do is sign up to the Organisational Theory, Culture and Behaviour class. This class is necessary if you want to do an internship. The content of the course is based around the theory of an organisation’s culture. It’s a course that lasts the whole semester and you should take it in the second semester of your second year. Alongside the class content there are also a couple of group assignments, more details on them would be given at the beginning of your course. It can be a really valuable course for when you begin your internship. Especially since during your internship you will have to do two extra assignments.

That’s another thing to be aware of when you begin your internship – throughout the internship you will have to do some assignments. Firstly, there is a 5000-word research paper. This is based on a topic that you pick which should be vaguely related to that internship. This also means that you will have to find someone to be your research supervisor, which can be a bit hard, but also requires a lot of perseverance at times. Alongside this there will the aforementioned 2 assignments. They will be based on the things you learnt in the course.

You will also have to complete an internship package before your internship counts. This involves summarising what your internship is and what your deliverables are. It shouldn’t be particularly long but detailed enough for the exam board to pass it. When doing an internship it should be noted that it feels like more work than the study abroad or minor option but I do think that doing it would be worth it if you want experience.
